VITAMINS are Organic compounds different in their structure and properties than the main organic compounds such as carbon hydrates, fats and proteins. They are necessary in very small quantities for the correct and normal function of every living organism and they act either in free form or in the form of co-enzymes as bio-catalysts in parallel with the hormones and the enzymes.
Their contribution is critical and substantial for the protection of health and the secure and correct operation of the organs of the animal's body. In this way increasing of animals' efficiency and productivity is achieved.
Every livestock species should daily intake, additionally to its food, a specific quantity of vitamins. Complete or partial deprivation of one or more vitamins from the organism causes several pathological symptoms, depressive illnesses, called dehydrations or vitamins deficiencies.
Vitamins are separated in water soluble ones which can be dissolved in water ( vitamins of complex B and C ) and in fat soluble ones which can be dissolved in fats and their dissolvers, ( vitamins A, D, E & K ).
Animals' needs in vitamins are small but not stable. They depend on the species, the improvement level of the race, the hygiene status of the herd and the conditions of maintenance and management of the animals.
Usually in modern livestock management holdings the vitamins are offered to the animals through their ration. However there are several factors which decrease the vitamins level in it, such as the presence of competitive to the vitamins substances, the presence of tainted fats or oils, the addition of medicines, the food use and management and finally the interaction of vitamins with other nutrients.
